Community calendar for Feb. 6

Events set

at the library

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library has planned the following events.

• Food for fines — now through Thursday, Feb. 28. Erase over due fines by donating a nonperishable food item for each dollar in overdue fines owed to HMMPL. All items collected will be donated to the Zionsville Food Pantry.

• Pop n’ Rocks and Prizes — Now through Sunday, March 3, teens and college students. Pick up a challenge sheet from the reference desk and set personal reading goals. Complete the challenge and turn in the sheet by Sunday, March 3, to win one of four prize baskets.

• Pop into a book for prizes — Now through Sunday, March 3. Read anything and write it on a challenge sheet. Submit it by Sunday, March 3, to try to win a prize basket.

• Baby and Preschool Storytimes — March 11 through April 19. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, for HMMPL cardholders. Open registration begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14.

• AARP Tax-Aide — 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. every Thursday from Feb. 7 to April 4. Free tax help for taxpayers with low and middle income with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Reservations required.

• Babies in Jammies — 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, birth through 11 months. Babies with their parents will enjoy songs, rhymes, action playing, a short book and play time.

• It’s a Mystery Book Club — 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7. Read and discuss “Woman in Black” by Susan Hill.

• Happy New Year — 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, ages 3 through 6. Celebrate Chinese New Year with stories, songs and a craft.

• Teen Council — 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, teens. Work on presenting the Youth as Resources grant to help fund the summer reading program.

• Safe-Sitter Class — 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, ages 11 to 13. Cost is $55. A course designed to teach babysitters how to be safe and nurturing caregivers, and how to handle children’s emergencies. Bring a sack lunch.

• Game On — 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Feb. 11, 18 and 25, teens and college students. Join in the Teen Area to play Wii and Xbox Kinect.

• Lego Read, Build, Play: Let’s Go! Vroom! — 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11, ages 3 through 6 with an adult. A combination of reading and building with Lego Duplo bricks.

• Presidents’ Day Chess Tournament: All Levels — 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18, ages 5 through 14. Join Aaron Dean for a Swiss system chess tournament appropriate for all skill levels. • Books over coffee — noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12. Bring a lunch and discuss a book. Coffee and dessert will be provided.

• Alien Invasion — 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, grades first through third. Join the staff for a galactic adventure at the library complete with Jell-O aliens, games and space goo.

• Wednesday a.m. Book Club — 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, adults. Drop in and discuss “A Secret Kept” by Tatiana De Rosnay.

• Financial Aid Night — 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, teens, college students and parents. Teens and their parents are invited to hear about the types of financial aid and learn how to fill out the FAFSA form.

•  Friends of the Library Book/Movie Discussion Group — 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, and 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27. Watch the movie “Julie and Julia” on Feb. 13 and discuss the book and movie Feb. 27. • Introduction to PowerPoint — 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Feb. 14, adults. Free computer class introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint 2010.

• Animal Adventure: Animal Food — 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, ages 3 through 6. Meet at the library for a story or two and walk over to the Zion Nature Center to visit with the real animals that live there.
