A closer look

Editor's note: The Times Sentinel drew names from the engagement announcements we printed in 2005 to find one couple to highlight. This is a more in-depth look at Deborah Jarrett and Aaron Biermann, whose engagement announcement ran in November.

They started out as friends, introduced a few years ago by mutual acquaintances at Indiana Wesleyan University. That friendship blossomed into something more, leading up to the day that Aaron Biermann of East Moline, Ill., proposed to

Deborah Jarrett of Zionsville on an ice skating rink in Iowa.

As romantic as the scene was, with Biermann down on one knee presenting Jarrett with a ring in the center of the rink, it wasn't without its problems. With the groom-to-be slipping on the ice and the bride-to-be laughing so hard she couldn't hear him propose, it wasn't what either had in mind for that moment. But for them, it made the already memorable moment all the more special.

"I had no idea he was ready (to propose)," Jarrett said. "He took me ice skating because we love it, and he said let's go to the center. He had a hoodie with a pouch, and he reached into the pouch and pulled it out, and I was like my goodness. It Was funny. He got down on one knee but it was slippery on the ice

so he fell, and I was laughing so hard I had to have him repeat the question."

Needless to say, laughter wasn't the response Biermann had planned expected, but he admits it was funny.

"I was laughing, too. I do wish it would have gone a little better, but at the same time it's something that will make it unique, something you can look back at and laugh," he said.
