The Zionsville Community High School Civil Engineering and Architecture class had the opportunity to tour the Servants At Work workshop and talk with Bob Graham. SAWs is a program that builds wheelchair ramps for those that cannot afford to have one installed. The students were able to learn from Graham about the planning that goes into building a ramp in addition to the design as it needs to meet ADA requirements. Every ramp is different because of considerations with the layout of the house and property lines. The students learned about site evaluations, design planning, cost estimation, and gained knowledge on how they use a manufacturing setup in the shop to help in streamlining a process that is very individualized for the final product. The CEA class hopes to partner with SAWs in the future to help in designing a ramp.
