Barton to change plea in senior facility attack

Ritchie Barton

This Monday's jury trial for Zionsville resident Ritchie Barton has been canceled, and a change of plea hearing has been set for June 5.

Barton is accused of attempting to murder a woman at a senior living facility about a year ago.

Barton, 66, is accused of stabbing a woman in her Crawford Manor apartment on the Hoosier Village campus in the early morning hours of May 25. The victim was able to make her way into a hallway during the attack, where the relative of a neighbor helped fight off the attacker and call police. She suffered wounds to her mid-sternum area, thigh and leg, and two police officers also sustained injuries in the process of arresting Barton.

Barton had entered a plea of not guilty at his initial hearing. A competency hearing for Barton set for earlier this year was delayed and later canceled.

The case is in Boone Superior Court I with Boone County Judge Matthew Kincaid.

In addition to attempted murder, Barton faces charges of aggravated battery, criminal confinement, two counts of attempted battery by means of a deadly weapon, and two counts of resisting law enforcement.
