The 12th ranked Zionsville tennis team saved their best for last in the regular season.
After winning the HCC title on Sept. 21, the Eagles went 3-0 in the final week of the regular season, topping No. 30 Guerin Catholic, McCutcheon and then capping it off with the biggest win of the season in a 3-2 win over No. 5 North Central.
“Tonight proved everything that I have been saying about the potential, believe, talent, desire, tenaciousness, and fight,” Zionsville head coach Earl Allen said in an email following the win over the Panthers. “The guys made me, coach Nelson, Coach Ruth, and the entire community so proud with your willingness to go the extra mile in your pursuit of challenging yourselves this entire season.”
At No. 1 singles, Cole Chappell lost to Ian Brady 6-2, 6-2 and at No. 2 singles, Nick Bailey lost to Ajay Mahenenthian 6-4, 6-4.
The Eagles were able to win all three other positions.
At No. 3 singles, Austin Kuklak defeated Jonathan Henry 6-4, 6-1.
The Eagles also got a big win at No. 1 doubles, where Robert Campbell and Ryan Carr defeated Richie Smikle and Max Simmell 6-4, 6-4. The match was decided at No. 2 doubles, where the Eagles duo of Ethan Perry and Nick Winters topped Carter Bailey and Daniel Ceglio 7-6 in the opening set, but lost to second 6-3. They came back to win the third 6-3 to win the match.
“Our No. 2 doubles are now the closers,” Allen said. “They reset their minds and games and going back to what has made both of our doubles team so successful, playing offensive and attacking tennis.”
The Eagles won 3-2 over Guerin earlier in the week. Chappell topped Thomas Darland 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Bailey won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. John Tiplick defeated Kuklak 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
At No. 1 doubles, C Metzger/T Harrington defeated Campbell and Carr 6-3, 7-6 (4). At No. 2 doubles, Winter and Perry topped Kolb and Thieme 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.
On Thursday, the Eagles honored their seniors on senior night with a 4-1 win.
At No. 1 singles, Bailey defeated Joe Sanson 6-2, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Tyler Martin defeated Jake O’Donnell 6-0, 6-0 and at No. 3 singles, Tate Eugenio defeated Gavin Nadalo 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 1 doubles, McCutcheon’s Dardeen/Shambough defeated Campbell /Perry 6-4, 6-4 and at No. 2 doubles, Will Gregory and Matthew Baluyut topped Devlin/Coffe 6-0, 6-0.
The Eagles start post-season play on Wednesday against Frankfort.
