Zionsville wrestlers Logan Wagner and Shane Bates both finished runner-up at the Al Smith Invite in Mishawaka over the weekend.
Wagner, ranked sixth in the state at 138 pounds, pinned his first two opponents – Jordan Howard of Plymouth and Christian Chavez of Mishawaka – to advance to the quarterfinals.
He beat Perry Meridian’s Matthew Koontz 8-7 in the quarterfinals, and 14th ranked Tyson Nisely of LaPorte 6-2 to reach the championship match.
There he faced Cathedral’s Logan Bailey, ranked second in the state, and lost 17-9.
Bates came into the tournament ranked 12th at 152 pounds.
He beat Bellmont’s Alec Mowery 10-4 and Perry Meridian’s Briley Biszantz 14-5 to advance to the quarters.
There, he topped Kolin Cope of Garrett 4-2 and in the semifinals topped Scottie Saylor of Carroll 7-0. In the final, he faced 10th ranked Kade Law of Columbus East, and lost 9-2.
The only other Eagle to place was Hudson Harreld at 132 pounds.
Harreld pinned Garrett’s Kane McCormack to reach the quarterfinals, but lost to Center Grove’s eighth-ranked Hayden Watson 12-2.
In the consolations, he pinned Merrillville’s Cameron Williams and Jimtown’s Ethan Eberehart to advance.
He lost to Vince Sparrow of Penn 4-0, but came back to beat Rasheek Bonds of Goshen to place fifth.
Also competing for the Eagles: Aidan Ackert went 1-2 at 106 pounds, Richard Keesee went 2-2 at 113 pounds, Aiden Dorsey went 1-2 at 120 pounds, Mason Fairchild went 1-2 at 126 pounds, Vince McDonald went 3-2 at 145 pounds, Luke Davis went 2-2 at 160 pounds, Chase Poynter went 3-2 at 170 pounds, Jim Rasche went 0-2 at 182 pounds, Chris Pappas went 0-2 at 195 pounds, Ben Jones went 1-2 at 220 pounds and Cam McDaniel went 2-2 at 285 pounds.
The Eagles travel to Westfield on Jan. 8.
