INDIANAPOLIS - Few teams had a better day on Friday night than the Zionsville girls swim team.
The Eagles advanced two relays into the championship final and have four individual swims in the top-3 seeds heading to tomorrow afternoon's State Finals at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The day got off to a great start in the opening event of the night for the Eagles.
The medley relay team of Elyse Heiser, Devon Kitchel, Carlin Barksdale and Peyton Skaff was seeded 12th heading into the night, but came out fifth in a time 1:44.48 to advance to the championship final.
The biggest move of the night came from Heiser in the 200-yard freestyle one event later.
Seeded 14th, Heiser won the third heat on Friday in a time of 1:48.24, which was good for second overall behind Carmel's Gretchen Lueking (1:47.91).
In the 200-yard IM, Devon Kitchel was seeded first and held that seed, going 1:59.41, more than two seconds ahead of the second-best qualifier. Kitchel will also be in lane four in the 100-yard butterfly after going 53.79, with Evansville Memorial's Elizabeth Broshears right behind her in 53.91.
Reagan Mattice will be in the consolation final of the 500-yard freestyle after placing 13th in a time of 5:02.12.
Zionsville nearly brought all three relays back thanks to a strong effort by the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Skaff, Mattice, Katie Buroker and Nour Razzouk. The quartet tied for 16th in a time of 1:39.34, forcing a swim-off with Southport.
The Eagles lowered their time to 1:38.91, Southport went 1:38.50 to advance.
Heiser will be the three-seed in the 100-yard backstroke after going 54.50 in the prelis. Carmel's Berit Berglund is the top seed in 53.41.
Zionsville's Shea Sullivan placed 32nd in the breaststroke, going 1:09.92, a new personal best.
The Eagles 400-yard freestyle relay team of Kitchel, Heiser, Mattice and Barksdale wnt 3:27.45 and were fifth in the prelims.
The finals start at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
