ZIONSVILLE – The Zionsville wrestling team hosted the Eagle Invite on Saturday, their annual individual tournament.
The Eagles placed third overall in the tournament. No. 6 Chesterton won the tournament with 371 points. Franklin Central placing second with 267 and Zionsville having 260.
The Eagles had one weight class champion on the day, with Shane Bates dominating the field at 152 pounds.
Bates pinned Tyler Martin and Evansville’s Reitz Alex Cooper, and topped Edgewood’s Landon Bell 5-3 to go unbeaten in his pool matches.
In the first-place match, he faced Franklin Central’s Benjamin Massey, and came away with an 8-2 win.
At 132 pounds, Zionsville’s Hudson Harreld placed second overall.
He went unbeaten in his pool matches, pinning Mason Fairchild and Chesterton’s Ethan Contreras. He also beat Lane Deckerd of Edgewood by technical fall.
In the championship match, Harreld lost to Center Grove’s Hayden Watson.
Aiden Dorsey placed third at 120 pounds. Dorsey went 2-1 in his pool matches to earn a spot in the third-place match, where he pinned Zach Traylor of Evansville Reitz.
At 138 pounds, Cooper Cecil got third. He also went 2-1 in his pool matches, and in his final match, won a close 9-7 decision over Conner Fuhr.
Junior Luke Davis and senior Chase Poynter placed third at 160 and 170 pounds respectively.
Both Eagle wrestlers went 2-1 in their three pool matches. In the third-place match, Davis pinned Colten Hubbell of Edgewood, while Poynter won a 7-3 decision over Kaleb Wymer.
The Eagles also got a third-place finish from Cam McDaniel at 285 pounds. McDaniel went 2-1 in his pool matches, before winning a 5-3 decision over Evansville Reitz’s Hunter Wimpelberg in the third-place match.
Aidan Ackert (106) and Colten Seiler (126) both earned fourth-place finishes for the Eagles in the tournament.
Richard Keesee placed fifth at 113 points, with Ben Jones placing sixth at 220 pounds.
Austin Parker (145) and James Rasche (182) placed seventh, with Chris Pappas (195) placing eighth.
Earlier in the week, the Eagles gutted out a 35-31 win over Hamilton Southeastern.
Richard Keesee won by pin at 113 pounds over Kyler Sapp. The Eagles got back-to-back wins at 132 and 138, with Hudson Harreld pinning Gaige Lloyd and Logan Wagner beating Jake Lemieux 23-10.
Bates was a winner at 152, winning a 14-5 decision over Cam Roberts. Luke Davis pinned Ryan Cast at 160 pounds, with Chase Poynter earning a 9-4 victory in overtime over Ronan Hiner.
The Eagles other win came at 195 pounds, where Chris Pappas pinned Jake Schneider.
The Eagles host No. 8 Avon on Wednesday night, before heading north to participate in the Penn Super Duals on Saturday, Dec. 21.
